What is Sadie's Cancer Fund?
Sadies Cancer Fund was created by Dr. Bree Montana, a veterinarian, as a division of the Agate Bay Animal Hospital, a 501(c)3 tax exempt charitable foundation. Sadie's Cancer Fund was created to facilitate chemo-therapeutic care for dogs and cats diagnosed with cancer. The fund is owned and managed by Bill West and Dr. Bree Montana, the owners of the Agate Bay Animal Hospital. Recipients of fund services are encouraged to replenish the fund at the level of their ability, at such time as they are able. Donations are always welcome and are fully tax-deductible.
Recipients of fund services are nominated by their Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. The fund is available for care of diagnosed cancers and is intended to offset the costs of treatments including, but not limited to, chemotherapy and labs associated with follow-up care.
Sadies Story:
Sadie was an energetic, outgoing German Shepherd dog that lived in North Lake Tahoe. She was a year-round athlete, spending hours with her people - snow-shoeing and cross country skiing in the winter, swimming, hiking, and basking in the summer.
Early in 2005, Sadie came home from a cross country ski-hike, demonstrating a subtle limp in her right front leg. X-rays showed an abnormality in her bone, and a diagnosis of osteosarcoma (bone cancer) quickly followed. Sadie’s friends and family came together to create a supportive care team, helping her through surgeries and chemotherapy. Careful choices and excellent care allowed Sadie to enjoy a wonderful quality of life with her family for another 9 months. Without such care, Sadie would likely have survived only another month, during which time her disease would have quickly consumed her. We started this fund in honor of Sadies’ spirit and perseverance, to aid other dog and cat parents in obtaining care, comfort, and improved quality of life where finances might not otherwise be available.
